The existing Norman’s Cay Airstrip was in poor condition and only 3,000 feet long; the airfield did not comply with international regulations for flight operations. The client is intending to develop an upscale resort and luxury housing on the Cay and wished to upgrade the airfield so that it could become a point of entry into the Bahamas. A marina was also to be developed for the use of the residents and guests.
BHM was appointed main contractor for the runway and marina works. The project includes the excavation of a marina which provides fill for the bulk earthworks for a new runway built partially on reclaimed land. Also included in the project are surface dressing, shore protection, sand seal road, fencing and traffic marking works. Due to the environmentally sensitive nature of the surroundings, inclusive of a National Marine reserve, a high degree of environmental compliance was established on the project.
